Adopting a puppy or kitten comes with a lot of responsibilities. There are certain things that a new pet parent must know about dogs and cats. Following are some do’s and don’ts about pets.
DO’S
Provide a Safe and Friendly environment: Just like humans, pets also need a safe and friendly environment to thrive and live the life to fullest. You should make sure to have an environment in which your pet feels safe. It will make the new pup/kitten adjust and adapt to new place and will create healthy relationship between you and your pet.
Form a Routine: Pets should have a proper routine just like a human baby. It will help both pet and pet parent to live accordingly. Pets, especially dogs when they are younger have hard time adjusting to new environment hence, a proper routine of food, playtime, baths, walks, bathroom time will help in establishing healthy habits.
Routine Vet Visits: Vaccinations are very important and must if you are adopting a pet. Unvaccinated dogs or cats are more prone to diseases than the vaccinated ones. It protects pets from common diseases like distemper, rabies, parvo virus, tick fever, etc. Routine vet visits allows you to maintain complete health record.
Training and Socialisation: Socialisation is essential for pets to build healthy boundaries between other animals as well as humans. Socialised pets tend to be more comfortable with new humans and animals as compared to unsocialised ones. It helps in preventing issues like fear, anxiety, aggressive nature, etc. It helps building confidence in them which helps them in adjusting and coping up with new situation easily and confidently.
DON’Ts
Never use harsh training: Training is an essential part of having a dog. Dogs should be properly trained about basic things to avoid future problems like aggression. But, training should be done positively. You should not use harsh methods like yelling or hitting the dog to make him understand some things. It will only disturb your relation with your pet and will make him/her lose trust in you.
Don’t punish later: You should never punish a them for things he/she has done in past. Pets don’t understand our language, they will not understand why you are punishing or yelling at them suddenly. It will only disturb them and make them fearful from you. You should punish them or let them know if they are doing something wrong then and there.
Don’t give human food without proper research: Certain human foods like raisins, grapes, onion, garlic, chocolates are extremely harmful for dogs as well as cats. They are also fatal sometimes. Hence, you should never let your pet consume any human food without proper research. Some essential oils are also dangerous to them. Always pay attention to what your pet is consuming. Contact vet if your pet consumes anything they should not.
Never neglect their health: You should never ignore any sign of distress shown by your pets. Always keep check on their behaviour> Contact your vet if you see anything wrong with your pet. You should keep record of their vaccinations and keep a check if your pet is allergic to something. never keep their food bowl and drinking water dirty, it increases the chance of stomach issues.
